A lamp for the cell, the craving, and the long way home
This is not a pile of links. It is a room of the Word for people in prison, in recovery, and for the ones who love them — and a direct line to Michael when you need a person, not just a page.
If you are looking for Him
God is not hiding from you
You do not have to get clean, get out, or get religious before you are allowed to seek Him. The seeking is the door. He meets people in cells, in parking lots, and in the quiet after a relapse.
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you.”

If you are inside
The Word has always gone behind the bars
Scripture is not embarrassed by a cell. Joseph learned the Lord in a prison. Paul wrote half the New Testament in chains. Jesus named visiting the prisoner as if it were visiting Him.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”

“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart… For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.”

Freedom in Isaiah is not only a gate swinging open. It is a heart that is no longer owned by the dark. Plenty of men have walked out of a facility still locked. Plenty have met Jesus on a bunk and been free before the date on the paper.
If you are in recovery
The old life does not get the last word
Addiction is not stronger than the cross. White-knuckle willpower is not the same as a new creation. Scripture talks about slavery and then talks about a Son who actually sets people free.
“Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin… So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

“For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”

Recovery is not pretending the craving never shows up. It is refusing to let the craving be lord. A way of escape is a real thing: a meeting, a phone call, a verse spoken out loud, a brother who will not let you sit in the lie alone.
If you are crushed
He stays near the ones who cannot perform
Shame tells you God only comes around for the tidy. The Psalms say the opposite. He is close to the brokenhearted. He does not despise a crushed spirit.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.”

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

If all you have tonight is a faintly burning wick, that is enough for Him to work with. He does not quench it. Bring the real wreckage. Performances do not heal people. Presence does.
If someone you love is locked up
You are not serving the sentence alone
The church is told to remember prisoners as if we were in there with them. That word is for mothers, children, wives, and friends who keep a chair empty and a prayer going.
“Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.”

“Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity.”

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through fire you shall not be burned.”

Loving someone through a sentence is its own kind of endurance. You cannot serve their time. You can refuse to forget them. You can write. You can pray their name. You can believe God is in the facility even when visiting hours are over.
If you just walked out
The gate is not the finish line
Reentry is holy and hard. Old streets remember your name. New mercies have to be chosen in the morning. Scripture talks about putting off the old self and walking as a child of light — one ordinary obedience at a time.
“Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life… and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

“Let your eyes look directly forward… Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.”

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”

A rock under your feet is not a feeling. It is a people, a church, work for your hands, and a Lord who does not ghost you when the paperwork is done. Stay close. Tell the truth when you stumble. Get back up.
A first hour
If you do not know where to start
Call on His name
Say it out loud if you can. Romans 10 does not require a chapel. It requires a heart that believes and a mouth that asks.
Open the Word
Start in Luke 15, John 8, or Psalm 107. Read slowly. If you are inside, a chaplain, a Bible, or a brother on the range can help you find a page.
Tell one person
Isolation is where the old life grows. Write Michael. Tell a chaplain. Call a recovery meeting. Shame shrinks in the light.
Keep going tomorrow
Mercy is new in the morning, not once. The same Jesus who met you tonight will not be bored with you at breakfast.
A prayer if you do not have the words
Jesus, I am tired of running. I have made a wreck of things I cannot fix. I believe You died and rose for sinners — and I am one. Forgive me. Come in. Be Lord of this life, this cell, this craving, this morning. I want the new creation, not another performance. Hold me. Amen.
